The term "synthesis" is used with little precision by state curriculum documents and important documents such as the ASLA's "Information Power" so as to cover a multitude of sins. If students merely collect and smush facts and opinions, McKenzie claims that they are really engaged in trivial pursuits. Synthesis and research should require fresh thinking and the development of ideas rather than mere cut-and-paste thinking.
