Poetry by Jamie McKenzie

Hold Me Tightly

On the sidewalk of the city sat an old man all alone
And the air vent at his shoulder
was the only friend he’d known
As he heard its gentle whisper blowing through the night
Singing gentle love songs, wrapping round him tight

Chorus:
Hold me tightly through the winter
Be my shield against the rain
Wrap your arms tight around me
Be my comfort from the pain

Walk on by him without looking, all you people without shame
He’s a body without feelings – just a man without a name
Or just toss some quarters at him – try to buy a little peace
What’s the price of never listening?
What’s the cost of his release?

In his hand he holds a beer can bought with quarters
tossed his way
In his dreams he holds a memory of a love who wouldn’t stay
He is fading into darkness, but he hears her gentle sigh
He can feel her close beside him – she is right there
at his side

As the city starts to tremble, and the night gives way to fear
He is listening to that air vent,
but his thoughts are nowhere near
He can hear her gentle whisper calling through the night
Singing gentle love songs, wrapping round him tight
